The Dragon’s Pursuit

1620a

The F-16C Fighting Falcon hugged the ground as close as the pilot would dare hoping to confuse the J-20’s radar.

This is another image I have created for a new Facebook page a friend and I have started called Defence of the Subatomic Realm. The name is an amalgamation of both of our own projects; mine being Defence of the Realm and his being The Museum of Subatomic Tourism.

Angels on the Platform

Weeping Angels old photo train platform

I made this pottering around one day. I basically took the picture of the abandoned station and added the two Weeping Angels from Doctor Who in to the foreground. The Angels are actually small figures. Once I matched up their tones as best I could I put it through an old photograph filter to give it that extra sense of mystery.

Phantom Pursuit

A West German Luftwaffe F-4F Phantom II chases an East German MiG-29 Fulcrum through the clouds in an alternate ending to the Cold War.

In pursuit of the Firefox

firefox

Over a freezing Norwegian countryside, the RAF Lightning pilot spots the near mythical MiG-31 Firefox. He opens the throttle to start his pursuit but the MiG-31 pilot blasts away through Mach 3.

1982’s Firefox starring Clint Eastwood is a classic Cold War thriller with that dirty underhand action carried out in a slow and foreboding pace. The book it was based on was inspired by rumours in western circles of an upgraded MiG-25 “Foxbat” that would be able to punch through Mach 3 (three times the speed of sound). In reality, the actual MiG-31 was marginally slower than its forebear but introduced significantly improved weapons and sensors.

This is the first image I have created for a new Facebook page a friend and I have started called Defence of the Subatomic Realm. The name is an amalgamation of both of our own projects; mine being Defence of the Realm and his being The Museum of Subatomic Tourism.

Class 170 – Modern Drudgery

BR Class 170 Severn Tunnel Junction

I was at Severn Tunnel Junction taking some pictures and got a real sense of the grey, drudgery of commuting. I liked this pic of a BR Class 170 so I decided to filter the image with that in mind; making it devoid of colour and clarity.

Handley Page Victor B.3

Handley Page Victor B.3 Skybolt

The Handley Page Victor was an advanced aircraft but there were proposals to make it even more sophisticated. One of the many proposals that came along was for the aircraft to be re-engined with Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines to replace the original Conways. This necessitated enlarged intakes and nacelles which Handley Page demonstrated with a model. The model also featured four generic underwing missiles.

I have taken the model and imposed it twice on to a background of sky. I have then aged the image.

Austrian Yak-23s over the Alps

Yak-23 Austrian Alps

A pair of Yak-23s of the Air Force of the Democratic Republic of Austria in 1957

For the past five years I have been heavily involved in a project called The Empire’s Twilight which is an alternate history project started by a mate of mine named Tim Morley. Tim was looking for a backstory to his many “What if” models and together along with a few others we hammered out an entire alternate history where the British Empire survived World War II under the guise of the New Commonwealth and was essentially a third party in the Cold War. This ultimately leads to a nuclear war in 1991.

Tim made the model of the Yak-23 and conceived the idea that Austria was broken in half after World War II in a similar manner to Germany. Like some of the other images I have made for the project I cut out the model and imposed it on an image of the Alps. I then aged the image and for effect added a photo border.

If you would like to know more about The Empire’s Twilight you can check out the Facebook page or read the Wikia.
